Welcome to the New Brunswick Wildlife Trust Fund Website
The New Brunswick Wildlife Trust Fund is managed by the New Brunswick Wildlife Council. This Wildlife Council is a committed group of 17 volunteers who represent hunting, angling, trapping, aboriginal, naturalist and environmental groups. The New Brunswick Wildlife Trust Fund has been established to fund a range of programs for the enhancement of New Brunswick’s wildlife, fish and their habitats. The main source of revenue is from a conservation fee on hunters, anglers, and fur harvesters licences. Other conservation-supporting New Brunswickers can contribute by purchasing the special Conservation licence plates or by becoming an “Supporter”. Money was also received from Maritime Road Development Corporation to compensate for environmental impacts on watercourses.
The money generated will fund fish and wildlife enhancement projects as well as conservation education programs. The Council members review every proposal submitted for December 1st and May 1st of each year. If approved, the Council will provide up to 75% of the cost of the project. In 1998, 65 projects were approved for a total of $959, 410. In 1999, $852,469.00 for 70 projects. In 2000, 69 projects for a total of $904,620. In 2001, $936,575 for 72 projects. In 2002, 82 projects for a total of $980,135.00. In 2003, 76 projects for a total of $856,130.00. In 2004, 89 projects for a total of $998,240.00. In 2005, 88 projects were approved for $967,195. For 2006, 86 projects for a total of $929,150. For 2007, 90 projects were approved for $958,895. For 2008, 96 projects were approved for $993,010. For 2009, 102 projects were approved for $934,70. In 2010, 116 projects were approved for $961,510. In 2011, 117 projects were approved for $1,052,190.00. The MRDC money has been used to fund 19 projects for a total of $555,960.00 since 1999. To help you prepare an application, documents are available at the office or on this web-site: terms of reference of NB Wildlife Trust Fund and NB Wildlife Council; the terms of reference of the different programs: fisheries, wildlife, biodiversity, trapping and conservation education; and application form. Each year, New Brunswick Wildlife Trust Fund issues a newsletter to inform fishermen, hunters, and the general public of their activities, financial and projects that were approved. The list of projects approved is also published in DNR fishing brochure and hunting brochure.
The NBWTF also initiated different programs such as the Conservation Award and the Youth Manual programs. The Conservation Award was to encourage the hook and release; resident and non-resident fishermen who returned their salmon fishing licence and their eight (8) unused tags were eligible for a draw of different prizes. The Youth Manual Program is for youth between the ages of 13-16. They are eligible to receive the required manuals to take the Firearms Safety/Hunter Education Program, Bowhunter Course, or the Trappers Course free of charge. The manuals are available free of charge at the local DNR office only. We also encourage the associations to share their experience and results of their projects on our web-site.
